Rachmaninoff composed Vocalise in 1912 (he later revised it in 1915), and it is the fourteenth song in his 14 Songs Op. Although Vocalise has no text, the other thirteen songs in this collection were set to poems written by some of Russia 's most famous Romantic poets such as Pushkin, Polonsky and Korinfsky.
Beginning of the score
'Vocalise' is a song by Sergei Rachmaninoff, composed and published in 1912 as the last of his 14 Songs or 14 Romances, Op. 34.[1] Written for high voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using any one vowel of the singer's choosing (see also vocalise). It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova.
Range[edit]
Although the original publication stipulates that the song may be sung by either soprano or tenor voice, it is usually performed by a soprano. It is sometimes transposed into a variety of keys, allowing performers to choose a vocal range more suitable to their natural voice, so that artists who may not have the higher range of a soprano can perform the song.[citation needed]

Rachmaninoff wrote this piece in 1915 for soprano vocalist.
No wonder the violinists were the first to perform it. But the celloists didn't blunder too — and now we know many lovely versions for cello. I am closer to the cello sound (Rostropovich's recording inspired me to this work), so I myself play this piece on the tenor saxophone. However, without any alterations you can perform it on soprano saxophone. And for the Alto saxophone you just need to change the instrument and reprint the notes for the soloist. Except the main score, this file contains the part for pianist (in concert pitch) and the sololist part for any sax 'in B' or even for a trumpet. Enjoy! P.S. Audiosource is the version of Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) from Russia with Love.
